At first, they were six musicians from really different backgrounds would meet up there to improvise their own versions of bluegrass, country and blues standards. Their love story took a whole new level after a couple of months, and they started writing their own songs in French Quebecois joual, crafting a sound that would be all their own, a crazy mix of cajun, zydeco, country, blues, bluegrass, ragtime and rock garage. After ranking #3 at the 2011 Francouvertes finals, Canailles is now a group of 8 self-taught hyperactive musicians, who graduated from whisky nights and will perform everywhere things are a-happenin’.

Over the past two years, Yukon Blonde has earned no shortage of acclaim for its hook-heavy brand of pop rock. But despite their love of vintage rock ‘n’ roll, the members aren’t the kind of guys who cling to the past. Their sophomore album Tiger Talk represents the next adventurous step in Yukon Blonde’s career. Its ten tracks are short and punchy, as the band trimmed the fat and packed hooks and brisk tempos into streamlined arrangements. “Radio” assaults the speakers with a brash stomp worthy of early Elvis Costello, while “Oregon Shores” blends its bouncy rhythm and sunny vocal harmonies with an epic, face-melting guitar solo. Elsewhere, a robotic drum pattern anchors “Breathing Tigers,” and “My Girl” taps into powerpop greatness with its “whoa-oh” refrain.

Diamond Rings defies laws of time and space. Electro-pop maestro John O makes music that exists outside specific eras, distilling encyclopedic knowledge and passion into laser-like beams of emotional immediacy. Physical limits don’t bother him much, either. True to his D.I.Y. background, he composes highly personal songs in a tiny bedroom studio in Toronto’s West End, yet is increasingly concerned with Diamond Rings reaching the widest possible audience. But don’t be confused by these twists and ripples. A degree in astrophysics isn’t mandatory to appreciate Free Dimensional, the second Diamond Rings full-length. A good heart and working ears are all the tools required.

Matt Mays is on a quest for the music that he hears in his head. When he stays still the sound of it drifts farther away: “when the vibrations stop it’s time to move on.” A few years back, Matt left wherever he was living at the time to embark on a journey into open space. To live in the midst of a world where anything could happen. A crusade into the sound, traversing the vast musical divide that he calls home. Mexico, California, Indonesia, Hawaii, Costa Rica, New York, wherever. He used surfing, yoga, and a ukulele as tools to bring him closer to the melodies and words in his head. Eventually, the sound was found. As soon as he stepped off the plane he started work an album he called Coyote: a proper home for all his experiences. Imagery painted with song. Coyote covers the whole spectrum of the sound that Mays finally found. “I’ve always loved animals that are beautiful but dangerous,” Matt explains. “It’s a good analogy for life. Coyotes are native to Canada, Mexico and the United States and that’s where I lived while writing this album.”

Deemed by Dazed and Confused as “hip hop’s saviour”, Cadence Weapon continues to firmly establish his legacy as a sonic pioneer while constantly pushing the rap and electronic music envelope. Following his critically acclaimed, Polaris Music Prize nominated albums Breaking Kayfabe and Afterparty Babies and a two year term as Edmonton’s Poet Laureate, he returns with Hope In Dirt City out now on Upper Class Recordings. Hope In Dirt City is a clearly defined and emotionally mature statement of intent that represents the culmination of these experiences. Composed of a unique hybrid of psychedelic soul, old school rap, IDM and mutant disco; Hope In Dirt City is a groundbreaking achievement in hip hop, and Cadence Weapons’ third Polaris Music Prize nominated album.
