Rustic State is a Montreal based folk-rock band that writes and performs original music for the underdog, loser and misfit. Their brand of heartland rock is in the same vein as The Tragically Hip, Tom Petty and The War on Drugs, but the tales they tell are uniquely their own. Though they certainly feel like they grew up in the wrong era, they are neither a retro act or rip-off artists. Their songs mesh frontman Shawn Thicke’s shaggy dog stories, and personal musings of modern life with the mythical romance of roots music. Their sound is pure blood and guts stuff. Flawed, charming and oh so human.
Thicke, guitarist Jean-Marc Grenier and bassist Zacharie Robert came together in the fall of 2017, as Temporary Flings. Upon meeting drummer Avi Elmaleh, they came up with a more permanent name. Since then, Rustic State has made quite an impression at numerous venues throughout their home-city, such as Petit Campus, Le Ministere and Barfly. They have become known for their contagious live energy, stripped-down instrumentation, and passionate vocals. Ever a part of their local community, they have also appeared at festivals and fundraisers like Porchfest, Rock The Park and Rock for Kids!. In 2018, they won MMA’s Ray of Light Charity Battle of the Bands 4 and put the money towards recording their first EP. They will be entering the studio this summer and hope to have their debut studio release within the year, so keep an eye out for these loveable miscreants.
